And today all I’ve read are a bunch of articles that say “Boston is has the highest accident in the country! Boston drivers are worse than anywhere else! Forget !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , D.C., and NYC, you will DEFINITELY DIE if you attempt to drive here. FOR GOD’S SAKE DO NOT OPERATE A MOTOR VEHICLE WITHIN THIS CITY!!!!” Too late now, I suppose. Still, the articles did say that if you must drive, at least drive a rental (done), and make it the smallest rental you can. I assumed my mom picked out a Fiesta or 500-sized car, but all she said was “They will let us pick from what’s there.” Which would be great if we weren’t landing at 11:20 pm, presumably sticking us with whatever is the last car on the lot. We shall see.
Old Saab because New England.

There was a rental place in Boston renting Saabs?!? Was it stick shift too?

Huhwah? I don’t think I’ve ever seen a rental place with a Saab. I know my dad had a rental Saab back in the late 90s, but that’s it.

Oh I misunderstood. When you said “presumably sticking us with whatever is the last car on the lot.”, I thought you actually did get that last car... and it was an old Saab that was WAAAY in the back that they found and hadn’t been used for a few years.
I’m a little tired today...
LOL

Driving a cah in Boston is easy ... drive it like you stole it or you’re a minority and Marky Mark and his bros are chasin’ ya.

As a Metro DC driver who has driven in Boston, drivers there are in fact Massholes and are known to invent lanes if a car will physical fit there. Its not as a bad as the DC issue of I can see where I want to be but can’t get there because of street layout but it wasn’t fun.

Cool. I’m heading up to Boston late October.

I’m flying out Nov. 19.

If you’re staying in the city, you don’t need it unless you’re heading out into the burbs. T is great and there’s a shuttle from the airport. When I go into Boston I generally park in a commuter lot in one of the close in suburbs or at an Amtrak station and take the T unless I’m flying out of Logan. Parking is expensive and driving on surface streets sucks if you aren’t used to big city driving and Masshole driving quirks.

Like I said, my mom already booked the car, and it wasn’t really my choice to make. We’re visiting Babson and Bentley colleges, not sure if those are in the city or the ‘burbs (technically neither are in “Boston”).

Oh yeah you’ll probably want a car for that. Not nearly as crazy as downtown.

We will be going downtown as well, but I have no idea if we’ll be driving. Part of me actually wants to just for the “adventure”.

I was just in Boston today! Home in MA for the first time in 10 months. Honestly we’re not as bad as everyone claims we are. Just stay alert and you should have no issue driving among Massholes. At least SOME of us use our blinkers.

As if I myself wasn’t an aggressive enough driver, my mom is going to be the one driving. She lived in NYC for a while, and several of my friends have described her driving as “scary”. She’s quite skilled, and not afraid to push her way through traffic.

Did you used to have the vanity plate “VIGGEN”?
![]() 10/05/2015 at 20:55 |

No. I’d probably only get that if I had a 9-3 Viggen, which I’ve never had. Never even owned a Saab, sadly.

Stephen Fry in america, he explained why boston is so bad for accidents and such. Link to the boston part .
Apparently, the roads were there before cars existed, thus leading to chaos.

I had no problems when I drove to Boston. Sure it is crowded, and sure the drivers are aggressive. Just try to be in the lane you need to be in, and act the part.

Well past of the problem is that in Boston a lot of the old roads were laid out from core paths. Grid make things easier which is what they did later on, but the older parts are mazes.

There’s lots of T stops with reasonably cheap parking in that area - probably much easier and cheaper than finding something downtown. It’s not as much of an adventure as it was back pre-Ez pass and in the era of the upper deck. Still has Boston cabbies though. You’ll get enough of the modern day experience going through the Ted Williams and on the Mass Pike.
